Motor Control
A motor control or a motor controller is
a device or a group of devices that controls or governs the performance
of an electric motor. A motor control is used for starting and
stopping a motor, selecting forward and reverse rotation, selecting and
regulating speed, regulating or limiting the torque and protection
against overloads and faults. A motor controller can be a manual
device or an automatic to control a motor. These can be as simple
as a soft start drive, or a variable frequency drive (VFD) or more
sophisticated such as a motor control center.
Motor Control Centers
Industrial and commercial
applications, such as the automobile manufacturing industry have a
motor control center. A motor control
center is enclosed with sections having a common power bus and
containing motor control units. A motor control center can also
include variable frequency drives, programmable controllers and
metering, which may be at the electrical service entrance for the
building. Where dusty or corrosive processes are used, the motor
control center may be installed in a separate air-conditioned room, but
most often they will be on the factory floor adjacent to the machinery
controlled.
Motor Control Center Options
A motor control center
usually has one or more vertical metal cabinets sections with a power
bus and provisions for plug-in mounting of individual motor
controllers. Each motor controller contains a contactor or a
solid state motor controller, overload relays, fuses or a circuit
breaker, and a disconnecting switch to isolate the motor circuit.
Three phase power enters each controller through separable connectors.
The motor control is wired to terminals in
the controller and provides wire ways for field control and power
cables.
A motor control center can either be supplied
ready for the customer to connect all field wiring or it can be
engineered with internal control and interlocking wiring to a central
control terminal panel board or programmable controller. It can
be specified with a wide range of options such as separate control
transformers, pilot lamps, extra control terminal blocks, control
switches, solid-state overload protection relays, various types of
bi-metal, or various classes of power fuses or types of circuit
breakers.
