Motor Starter Selection Help
Below are specifications that you will want to consider when selecting a motor starter for your application.
Motor Starter Enclosures
Motor starters can come with a number of different enclosure types, ranging from NEMA 1 all the way to 13. NEMA is a set of manufacturing standards used in the United States.
TEMCo offers the NEMA 1 and NEMA 4X motor starter enclosures.
NEMA 1 are intended for indoor use. They provide protection against foreign contaminants, such as dirt, but are not designed to keep out dust, water or oil. Motor start/stop stations are often housed in NEMA 1 enclosures.
The NEMA 4X motor starter is typically made of stainless steel or plastic. They are washdown and rust proof and can be used in harsh environments since they protect against dust, water, ice and corrosion. NEMA 4X industrial enclosures are available in a range of sizes, from small wall mounts to two-door floor mounts.
NEMA 4X motor starters can be used in applications where washdown occurs repeatedly, such as meat/ poultry processing facilities and chemical plants, and petroleum sites.
TEMCo 4X motors are made of plastic and are not meant to be used outdoors.
Motor Starter Applications
Any motor can be connected to a starter.
Motors in household appliances and power tools may have a switch that connects to a power source. The switch can either be operated manually, or can be connected to a sensor that will tell the motor to automatically start or stop.
Motor starters also come with protection from current overload, which can occur if the full load amp rating is exceeded.
There are other types of specialized magnetic motor starters such as reversing motor starters for reversing motors, and multi-speed motor starters for multi-speed specialized electric motors.
A motor starter will be either single phase or three phase.
Single phase will most often be found in ordinary household wiring. If you are using your motor in a residential area, single phase is most likely what you have.
Three phase motors are more often used in industrial shops or places that run high powered equipment that would not be found in an ordinary house.
You should determine what phase your motor is before purchasing a new one, though you can also buy a phase converter if you buy the wrong one. In some circumstances a three phase starter can be used in a single phase application. Call TEMCo at 510-490-2187 to find out more.
Combination vs. Non-combination
Combination starters may contain: Fuses or switches for motor disconnect, motor branch circuit protection in the form or a circuit breaker, motor controllers and motor overload protection.
Combination starters are common because they have everything included in one package.
Non-combination starters only contain either a start/stop and reset button, or just a reset button, as well as overload protection. They are simpler to operate than combination starters and will be used in a single piece of equipment, such as a table saw.
The motor starters that are sold by TEMCo are non-combination starters. If you need a combination starter, give TEMCo a call and we can build it special for you.
The overload range of the motor is the operating amperage at which the motor can safely operate.
If the motor were to run at an amperage that was higher than the specified range of amps, the motor would experience failure.
The overload range will be based on the amperage of the motor, which will operate at either 115 or 230 volts for single phase motors, and either 200, 230, 460 or 575 volts for three phase motors.
Our sIngle phase motor starters have overload ranges starting at 2.8 to 4.0 amps and go to 32-50 amps.
Our three phase motor starters have overload ranges that begin at 0.8-1.2 amps and go all the way up to 90-112 amps.
Coil voltage is the voltage at which the coil inside the starter will be energized. It is commonly the same as input voltage going to the motor.
Our NEMA 1 and NEMA 4X starters have coil voltages that will be 120 or 208-240.
Our motor starters can contain different controls for operating the motor, including start/stop buttons, reset buttons and remote operation.
The single phase NEMA 4X enclosure, as well as the three phase NEMA 1 and NEMA 4X enclosures, have a start/stop button and a reset button.
The single phase NEMA 1 motor starters only contain a reset button and do not come with a start/stop. They will be used in conjunction with motors that have their own start/stop button, and will only be used for to reset thermal overload.
The single phase NEMA 1 will also come with operated remotely, which does not mean it comes with a separate starter you can carry around with you. The remote operator will be a hardwired box with buttons. These are typically used with reset only motor starters, but can also be used with start/stop buttons as well.
See the manufacturers specifications and call our magnetic motor starter specialists for further abilities and specialized magnetic motor starter types.
